Wrapping up Virgin Media’s BAFTA #MustSeeMoment
Lights, camera and A LOT of action!
Sunday saw the pinnacle of #VirginMediaBAFTAs week with the best of the TV descending on Awards night. We used Virgin Media’s prime red carpet spot to live-stream the action to millions with our partners TikTok and creator Ehiz Ufuah, and we crowned Virgin Media’s #MustSeeMoment winners Rose and Giovanni by announcing their win through sign language live on stage, the first time this has ever happened in BAFTA history.
To build anticipation for Awards night we celebrated Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment Award by releasing content each day during BAFTA week dedicated to each nominee. From Rose and Giovanni surprising deaf children with a dance class, to teaming up with the Reign podcast to see Callum Scott Howell opened up about the importance of his role in It’s A Sin.
Rose and Giovanni’s silent dance to ‘Symphony’ on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing wins Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment award at tonight’s 2022 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards.
The accolade, presented by Rochelle Humes and Clara Amfo, was collected by Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice. The winning moment, from an episode of Strictly Come Dancing which had over 10 million viewers and received 2.1 million YouTube views, makes it one of the show’s most watched performances of the series.
The performance showed the power of television, driving conversation and creating awareness of the D/deaf community as well as real change with helping to pass the bill to make British Sign Language an official language this year. Now, the British public have shown their support and backed Strictly Come Dancing, Rose, Giovanni and their message by crowning them winner of Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment.
Rose said “Thank you to every single person who has voted for us. It’s a very special moment for us and hopefully it’s shown how powerful TV can be, where actually it can influence and change things. It’s even helped with BSL and made people stand up more for British sign language. And Jjst a better deaf awareness and positive attitude towards people. We’ve still got a long way to go but it’s such a great start”
Giovanni added “When we first had the idea to put the song into the dance we knew it would have an impact but this is bigger than we thought. This is changing people’s lives. Thank you for everyone who voted for us, as it mean you’re ready for a change.”
It was a star-studded week that was impossible to ignore! Viral tiktoks, purpose-led content, inspiring podcasts and well-deserving winners. Congratulations to all winners and nominees!
